The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Jan. 17 and 22.
Jan. 17
5:46 p.m.: An employee reported finding a heart-shaped piece of wood with two concerning sentences written on it at the University Recreation Center on the Edinburg campus. The case is under investigation.
6:33 p.m.: University Police observed two men crossing the border fence near the Interdisciplinary Academic Building on the Brownsville campus. An officer and the U.S. Border Patrol responded to the location. Border Patrol apprehended the two men, who were identified as Mexican nationals.
Jan. 19
10:23 a.m.: An employee found a vehicle with a fictitious parking permit in the Academic Support Facility Complex on the Edinburg campus. An officer contacted the car’s owner and the student turned over the false permit. The case is under investigation.
3:51 p.m.: An employee reported seeing a post on social media through which an unknown person was trying to sell fictitious UT Health medical excuses. The case is under investigation.
7:24 p.m.: An employee reported that a man was accessing the rooms on the second floor of the eBridge Center for Business and Commercialization in downtown Brownsville without permission. An officer located and identified the man, explained that only the first floor was open to the public and escorted him from the area.
Jan. 20
1:42 a.m.: An officer responded to an active fire alarm in the Academic & Clinical Research Building in Harlingen. The Harlingen Fire Department arrived and determined the building was safe for reentry.
8:16 a.m.: University Police observed a U.S. Border Patrol agent in pursuit of an individual through Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. An officer contacted the agent, who said two individuals were apprehended and a third was picked up by an unknown person in a gray vehicle at Lincoln Park before leaving the area.
Jan. 21
4:32 p.m.: An employee requested that the lock on her locker be cut after she left her keys inside in the Dining & Ballroom Complex on the Edinburg campus. An officer assisted the employee and confirmed the items belonged to her.
Jan. 22
12:05 p.m.: A non-affiliated man attempted to enter the Mathematics and Science Academy on the Edinburg campus. Upon further investigation, University Police found that the man had a lengthy criminal record and no valid reason to be on campus. Police officers issued the man a criminal trespass warning for all properties belonging to the university.
2:21 p.m.: An officer and the university locksmith assisted a student who accidentally secured his key inside his locker in Health Affairs Building West on the Edinburg campus. The officer confirmed the items belonged to the student.
5:27 p.m.: Officers responded to an active fire alarm inside the Biomedical Research Building on the Brownsville campus. Officers determined a construction crew who was working in the area had accidentally caused the alarm to go off. Environmental Health and Safety was notified and the building was deemed safe for reentry.
11:35 p.m.: University Police observed two individuals via closed-circuit TV cameras attempting to cross the border fence near the Interdisciplinary Academic Building on the Brownsville campus. An officer and U.S. Border Patrol arrived on location where they apprehended a man and a woman who were identified as Mexican nationals.
