The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Feb. 13 and 19.
Feb. 13
12:17 p.m.: An officer met with a non-affiliated woman who reported someone had keyed her car while it was parked in Lot H-5 on the Harlingen campus. The case is under investigation.
2:46 p.m.: A student reported an unknown man slammed on her window and asked to see her handicap placard while she was sitting in her vehicle in an accessible parking space in Lot E-15 on the Edinburg campus. The man, who was identified as an employee, left after she showed him her placard. He was advised to contact the appropriate department for parking-related issues.
3:50 p.m.: Officers spoke with a student who reported he was almost run over by a male driver in a white vehicle in Lot E-21 on the Edinburg campus. After further investigation and review of closed-circuit TV cameras, it was determined a verbal disturbance had occurred between the two individuals. University Police determined no crime occurred.
Feb. 14
11:46 a.m.: An officer and Environmental Health and Safety staff responded to an active fire alarm in Troxel Hall on the Edinburg campus. They discovered the alarm was triggered due to fumes released while contractors were spray-painting the dorms. The building was deemed safe for reentry.
4:46 p.m.: Upon returning to parking lot E-26 to check on a wheel lock that was placed on a vehicle for outstanding citations, a Parking and Transportation Services employee reported that the vehicle and wheel lock were gone. The case is under investigation.
5:47 p.m.: A student on the Edinburg campus was seeking assistance on the status of a sexual assault incident that occurred in June 2022 at an off-campus location, which she had reported to the Starr County Sheriffโs Office in Rio Grande City. The case is under investigation.
Feb. 15
3:10 p.m.: A Parking and Transportation Services employee reported a student had been using unauthorized free visitorโs parking permits since September 2023. The student made arrangements with the department to buy a parking permit.
5:47 p.m.: An officer responded to the Child Development Center on the Edinburg campus in reference to a child whose parents did not pick them up before closing time. The officer waited with employees until a parent picked up the child about 45 minutes late.
6:46 p.m.: An officer spoke to a student over the phone who reported her ex-boyfriend, who is also a student, approached her at the Student Union on the Edinburg campus and hugged her without her consent. When she moved away from him, he used vulgar language toward her. The case is under investigation.
Feb. 16
7:18 a.m.: Officers responded to a panic alarm, which was received by the Edinburg Police Department, at the Chick-fil-A in the Student Union on the Edinburg campus. Upon arrival, EPD officers reported the alarm came from a personal panic alarm device, possibly from a delivery driver. The food court and surrounding areas were checked, but nobody who needed assistance was located.
Feb. 19
5:23 a.m.: Officers responded to a fire alarm in the University Library on the Edinburg campus. Upon arrival, officers determined the alarm was triggered by smoke from an oven at the Heritage Coffee shop. The building was checked and deemed safe for reentry.
7:36 a.m.: An officer responded to a gas leak in a concession stand in the Baseball Stadium on the Edinburg campus. Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management staff determined a stove pilot was out, which caused the gas to accumulate in the building. The building was aired out, and Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management staff deemed it safe for reentry.
2:42 p.m.: An officer and the Edinburg Fire Department responded to Lot E-34 on the Edinburg campus regarding a fire in a small trash can. Upon arrival, the fire was extinguished. The case is under investigation.
