The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Feb. 20 and 26.
Feb. 20
8:34 a.m.: University Police received information regarding an incident in which a student was assaulted a year and a half ago at an off-campus location in Hidalgo County. The case is under investigation.
7:38 p.m.: A student waved down University Police and reported she was being followed by her non-affiliated ex-boyfriend. An officer contacted and identified the man, who was parked in Lot E-16 on the Edinburg campus, before issuing a criminal trespass warning. The student did not file criminal charges.
Feb. 21
8:54 a.m.: University Police responded to an active fire alarm in the University Library on the Brownsville campus. Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management advised that a water pipe triggered the alarm and deemed the building safe for reentry.
2:52 p.m.: A student reported being struck by a vehicle Feb. 5 while she was crossing the roadway near Lot E-3 on the Edinburg campus. She did not sustain any injuries and said the driver had left the scene without providing any information. The case is under investigation.
2:52 p.m.: A City of Edinburg dump truck driver accidentally drove over an underground water meter and broke the water line near the Health and Physical Education Building on the Edinburg campus. University Police responded to the location and Facilities staff arrived and turned off the water valve until repairs could be made.
6:22 p.m.: University Police and the Harlingen Fire Department responded to smoke rising from the roof of the Clinical Research Building. Officers checked the building upon arrival and determined a technician had serviced an MRI machine by releasing helium gas, which appeared as smoke. The building was deemed safe for reentry.
Feb. 22
9:41 a.m.: A University Recreation Center employee reported female students had made complaints about a man who was constantly staring at them while they were working out. The employee identified the man as a gym member and had already completed a Maxient report on the incident. The case is under investigation.
8:51 p.m.: University Police responded to a verbal argument between two employees in the Dining and Ballroom Complex on the Edinburg campus. The officer determined no crime occurred, and both employees left the area without further incidents.
10:01 p.m.: A student reported a man attempted to speak with her while she was walking to her car in Lot E-9 on the Edinburg campus. She reported the man left the area in another vehicle. The case is under investigation.
Feb. 23
1:44 p.m.: A student on the Brownsville campus reported receiving harassing text messages and having her vehicle vandalized off-campus. The Cameron County Sheriffโs Office, who had received a report from the student, is investigating the alleged criminal incidents.
Feb. 24
12:17 p.m.: A staff member reported a suspicious man in Lot E-4 on the Edinburg campus. University Police spoke with the non-affiliated man who said he was on campus playing a mobile game. Officers conducted a criminal history check and determined the man had a history of arrests for aggravated assault, evading arrest and resisting arrest. The non-affiliated man received a criminal trespass warning and left campus without further incident.
Feb. 26
11:06 a.m.: University Police met with a student who reported her bicycle was stolen Feb. 25 from a bike rack near the Casa Bella apartments on the Brownsville campus. The case is under investigation.
12:16 p.m.: University Police responded to a report of a nitrogen tank leaking in the Science Building on the Edinburg campus. Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management arrived on scene and determined the nitrogen tank was not leaking. The building was deemed safe for reentry.
10:41 p.m.: University Police met with a non-affiliated man who reported his two laptops were taken from the common work area at the eBridge Center for Business and Commercialization building on the Brownsville campus. Upon further investigation, the officer determined the laptops had been collected by staff for safekeeping and will be returned to the owner.
