The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between March 6 and 18.
March 6
12:02 p.m.: University Police and Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management staff responded to an active fire alarm in the Mathematics and Science Academy on the Edinburg campus. It was determined the alarm was triggered by smoke emitted from burnt food inside a microwave. EHS deemed the building safe for reentry.
March 7
5:21 p.m.: Officers responded to four individuals who were observed climbing the border fence near Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. All four individuals were detained and released to the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol.
March 8
9:51 a.m.: University Police responded to a report of a suspicious man in Lot E-19 on the Edinburg campus. The officer located the man, identified him and released him. It was later determined the subject has an active criminal trespass warning. On March 12, a University Police officer responded to the City of McAllen, where the man was being detained by a McAllen Police officer. The University Police officer took custody of the man and transported him to the Edinburg Municipal Jail without further incident.
March 9
11:04 p.m.: University Police responded to a resident assistant in the Village Apartments on the Edinburg campus who reported confiscating alcoholic beverages from two students who were only in violation of housing policies. The case is under review.
March 10
9:55 p.m.: University Police responded to a fire alarm in the Clinical Education Building on the Harlingen campus. Upon arrival, it was determined the fire panel was malfunctioning and it was placed on test mode as per Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management.
March 11
3:43 p.m.: An employee reported a non-affiliated man with an active criminal trespass warning at the University Library on the Brownsville campus. Officers spoke with the man, then transported and booked him into the Brownsville City Jail on the charge.
March 12
6:39 p.m.: A University Police communications officer received an email through the police email account where an unknown sender was inquiring about a case that occurred in Yugoslavia. The email contained suspicious links.
March 15
10:21 a.m.: A non-affiliated man waved down a University Police officer to request assistance due to a mental and medical crisis. Brownsville police officers and emergency medical services arrived, but the subject declined to be transported. A family member arrived and took the man for further medical treatment.
12:38 p.m.: A UTRGV student was causing a disturbance during a tennis match at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center on the Edinburg campus. Officers responded to the location and discovered five student spectators from North Dakota felt threatened by comments the UTRGV student made. The victims chose not to file charges. University Police officers issued the UTRGV student a criminal trespass warning for all UTRGV sporting events for the remainder of the academic year at the request of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, according to Assistant Chief of Police Van Slusser.
6:45 p.m.: An employee reported an injury due to battery liquid falling in her left eye while setting up chess equipment at the Health and Physical Education Complex on the Edinburg campus. The employee declined emergency medical services and stated she was fine.
March 18
3:29 p.m.: A 911 call was placed at the Health and Physical Education Complex regarding smoke on the roof. The Edinburg Fire Department responded and located a smoldering fire, which was extinguished. It was determined a welding spark ignited flammable material during construction work. No injuries were reported.
