Feb. 14
11:57 a.m.: A suspicious man was reported at the Child Development Center on the Edinburg campus. He was determined to be a non-affiliated person, and issued a criminal trespass warning.
Feb. 15
8 a.m.: An unknown suspect forced a window open to a construction office trailer and stole computer equipment in Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. A Clery Act Timely Warning Notification was issued. Later on, some of the stolen property was found abandoned off campus and recovered.
10:42 a.m.: An unknown man and woman approached a staff member at the Biomedical Research & Health building on the Brownsville campus and asked for water, but when he didn’t have any, they became frustrated. The staff member later witnessed the pair yelling at a professor walking by. The couple left before an officer could contact them.
9:12 a.m.: A student was concerned that her parents may have placed a recording device to monitor her activity or conversations in her residence hall room at Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus. She requested a consent search to check for any device, but nothing was found.
Feb. 18
3:36 a.m.: A UTRGV Police Department staff member reported backing up into an emergency e-phone at the Soccer Complex on the Brownsville campus. There were no injuries.
2:34 p.m.: A student reported her bicycle was stolen from the Music, Science, & Learning Center Building on the Brownsville campus.
Feb. 19
9:20 a.m.: An officer responded to a report of a suspicious man near Sabal Hall on the Brownsville campus. The man was identified and issued a criminal trespass warning.
4:40 p.m.: A staff member hit a non-affiliated vehicle in front of the Visitor Center Drive on the Edinburg campus. The staff member was operating a UTRGV shuttle bus, in which one student was on board during the accident. There were no injuries reported, and no damage to the bus. There was minor damage reported to the vehicle.
Feb. 20
7 p.m.: A student reported that he was approached at his on-campus apartment on the Edinburg campus by an unknown man asking for donations that he claimed would benefit a military branch of his choice. The student agreed to donate, but realized that the phone number the man gave him was a non-working number.
UPDATE:
Upon further investigation of a previous case on Feb. 6, in which a staff member’s vehicle was keyed in Lot E-37, it was discovered through parking lot cameras that the culprit was a former student who had also caused damage to the staff member’s vehicle in the same way in Lot E-7 in January. It was revealed that the culprit had also been harassing the staff member via social media and text. An arrest warrant was obtained and executed without incident. He has been charged with two counts of criminal mischief and issued a criminal trespass warning for UTRGV properties.
