Aug. 16
12:58 p.m.: The Edinburg Police Department investigated reports of an accident resulting in damage to a tree in Lot E-40 on the Edinburg campus.
Aug. 17
7:10 a.m.: A staff member crashed his vehicle into the Research Education Building on the Edinburg campus. He confused the brake with the accelerator as he was parking. He declined emergency medical services. The vehicle was towed.
10:06 a.m.: An officer observed a non-affiliated man carrying a small child near the Facilities Services Complex by the U.S. Border on the Brownsville campus. The officer learned the man and his daughter had just crossed the river and were both from Honduras. The U.S. Border Patrol arrived and took them into custody.
5:01 p.m.: A non-affiliated woman suffered from heat exhaustion at the Soccer and Track & Field Complex on the Edinburg campus. Emergency medical services transported her to Edinburg Regional Hospital.
Aug. 18
1:33 a.m.: An officer found a non-affiliated man passed out in the driver’s seat of his running vehicle in Lot E-16 on the Edinburg campus. He was found to be intoxicated and a danger to himself. The man was arrested on charges of public intoxication and jailed in the Edinburg City Jail.
9:02 p.m.: A student reported his dorm room at Troxel Hall on the Edinburg campus was burglarized. The burglary took place between 11:34 a.m. Aug. 17 and 8:30 p.m. Aug. 18. A timely warning notification was sent out.
UPDATE: Upon further investigation and reviewing video cameras from the area, campus police detectives identified a male suspect. The suspect has previous arrest history with University Police and an active criminal trespass warning on file. Detectives were able to locate some of the stolen property at pawn shops in Edinburg. Detectives obtained two arrest warrants for the suspect for burglary of habitation (second-degree felony) and criminal trespass (class A misdemeanor). The suspect was located and arrested. He was jailed in the Edinburg City Jail and is waiting arraignment.
Aug. 19
9:19 a.m.: A staff member’s driver’s license and debit card were stolen from her purse at San Carlos Clinic near the Edinburg campus. She learned that her card was used without her knowledge on a movie streaming site.
11:23 a.m.: A faculty member lost his university-issued key off campus.
1:38 p.m.: A suspicious item was found in Lot H-4 on the Harlingen campus. The item was a microwave oven left by an unoccupied vehicle. A university officer set a perimeter and contacted the Brownsville Police Department Bomb Squad. An emergency alert message was sent out. The bomb squad later cleared the item and all normal operations were resumed.
2:37 p.m.: A staff member at the Bursar’s Office reported her cash box was short $100 at the Main Building on the Brownsville campus.
2:38 p.m.: A faculty member lost her university-issued key off campus.
6:58 p.m.: A staff member at the Bursar’s Office reported her cash box was over $100 at the Student Services Building on the Edinburg campus.
Aug. 20
11:41 a.m.: The pawn shop that received several stolen items from a suspect from a previous case of burglary wishes to file criminal charges for its loss. The case is under investigation.
Aug. 21
10:17 a.m.: A staff member reported losing a university-issued key at the University Financial Services on the Edinburg campus.
11:24 a.m.: A student injured her left ankle while walking down the stairs at Sabal Hall on the Brownsville campus. She declined emergency medical services.
3:37 p.m.: A faculty member reported receiving a suspicious phone call at his off-campus residence. The caller informed the faculty member that his computer was hacked. However, he does not own a personal computer, using only a work computer at the university. The caller instructed him to call him as soon as he was at work. While filing the report, the caller contacted the member again and the officer contacted him on the Edinburg campus. The caller immediately hung up during the call. No personal or work-related information was given and the university computer was not breached.
10:59 p.m.: A U.S. Border Patrol agent notified UTRGV Police that they were searching for several individuals on the west side of Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. Four individuals were found and taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol. Three are from Mexico, and the fourth from Honduras.
