Police Reports

The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between April 12 and 19.

April 12 

4:54 p.m.: A staff member at the Bursar’s Office on the Edinburg campus reported being short $100 on her cash register at the end of her shift. A report was filed for documentation purposes. 

7:40 p.m.: A staff member reported that a fellow staff member had suddenly resigned and still had university property in her possession. The staff member filing the report wanted to document the incident. 

April 13

1:19 p.m.: An officer observed two individuals jump over the U.S. border fence and enter a brush area between Lot B-1 and Levee Road on the Brownsville campus. U.S. Border Patrol agents were notified and dispatched to the area. The U.S. Border Patrol agents apprehended both individuals, who were from Honduras and Nicaragua, without incident. 

2:27 p.m.: A staff member reported her university parking permit went missing in December 2020. A report was generated for documentation purposes. 

8:07 p.m.: The Edinburg Fire Department and an officer responded to the dining hall in reference to a fire alarm. The indication on the fire panel read there was heat detected in a room. The fire department checked the room, confirmed there was no heat source detected and deemed the building safe for re-entry. 

April 14 

8:55 a.m.: An officer assisted the Brownsville Police Department with traffic control at the scene of an off-campus traffic accident on Ringgold Road. The police department is conducting an investigation. 

3:36 p.m.: A staff member reported that a set of building keys was missing. 

April 15

3:30 a.m.: An officer observed an open door to a storage container that belonged to a contractor working at the Community Engagement and Student Success Building on the Edinburg campus. The officer observed the container was empty and had no forced signs of entry. It was later determined the container was left open and empty by the contractor. 

3:30 p.m.: The Edinburg Fire Department and an officer responded to a fire alarm at the University Recreation Building on the Edinburg campus. Upon arrival, the officer made contact with a staff member conducting maintenance on the fire panel. The alarm had been activated during maintenance of the system. 

3:30 p.m.: A staff member reported receiving a letter at his off-campus residence in San Juan from the Texas Workforce Commission stating he had filed a claim for unemployment. The staff member reported the false claim to Human Resources and the San Juan Police Department. A report was generated for documentation purposes. 

5:17 p.m.: A student reported receiving harassing text messages and emails. The case is under investigation.  

9:34 p.m.: An officer responded to the south side of the Social Work and Occupational Therapy Building on the Edinburg campus to assist the Edinburg Police Department with the investigation of a single-vehicle accident involving a non-affiliated operator. The accident initially occurred on the roadway, but the vehicle ended up on the south side of the building and struck the outdoor fire system. Environmental Health and Safety was informed of the damage, and the police department is investigating the traffic accident. 

April 18

9:08 a.m.: An officer was notified of several emails sent to a department-managed email account. The emails were from a former student and raised concerns about his well-being. The Harlingen Police Department assisted by conducting a welfare check at the former student’s residence in Harlingen. The police department contacted the former student and his mother, and confirmed he was OK. 

April 19 

12:57 a.m.: An officer observed a suspicious man leaning on the northwest side entrance of the International Trade and Technology Building on the Edinburg campus. The officer made contact with the non-affiliated man and determined he was intoxicated by alcoholic beverages to the point that he was a danger to himself. Further investigation revealed that the man had an active trespass warning on file for all UTRGV properties. After being charged with public intoxication and criminal trespass, the man was jailed in the Edinburg City Jail without incident.
