The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Aug. 11 and 16.
Aug. 11
1:38 p.m.: UTRGV officers conducted a traffic stop on a non-affiliated man. Records revealed an active arrest warrant out of the Edinburg Police Department for aggravated assault. The City of Edinburg police arrived and took custody of the man.
2:39 p.m.: UTRGV officers were dispatched to assist with an employee who was stuck inside an elevator at the Science Building on the Edinburg campus. Officers opened the elevator door with the emergency key, but the elevator was stuck in-between floors. The Edinburg Fire Department later arrived and extracted the individual through the top emergency exit hatch. No injuries were reported.
4:40 p.m.: A member of a student organization reported that, while sanding a bench on the Edinburg campus, the backrest broke off due to corrosion of the metal and wood.
Aug. 12
7:30 a.m.: A UTRGV police officer observed a vehicle improperly parked and with a flat tire at the entrance of Lincoln Park, adjacent to campus. Upon approaching the vehicle, a non-affiliated man was found asleep at the driver’s seat. After further investigation, the man was placed under arrest for public intoxication and transported to the Brownsville City Jail without incident.
12:52 p.m.: UTRGV officers responded to the Health Affairs Building West regarding a fire alarm that was activated by smoke. After further investigation, it was determined that personnel were cooking food in the kitchen, which caused the excessive smoke to trigger the fire alarm. Edinburg Fire Department arrived and deemed the location safe for reentry.
1:33 p.m.: A UTRGV employee reported a suspicious man looking into cars in parking Lot E-20 and in Lot E-21. A check of the area yielded no results.
5:34 p.m.: A UTRGV student worker reported there was a suspicious man sitting outside of the office she was currently working at and felt uncomfortable walking to her vehicle due to a previous encounter she had with the man. A second officer contacted the man who was also a student worker and was at the same building waiting for a friend. Once it was determined that a crime had not been committed, the man was asked to leave the area and she was provided an escort to her vehicle.
Aug. 13
1:41 a.m.: A UTRGV officer conducted a traffic stop on a non-affiliated driver. During the stop, the officer detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle. A search was conducted of the vehicle and no drugs were found. Two of the occupants were minors (aged 13 and 15) and were out past city curfew hours without an adult family member. The adult driver and adult passenger were released from the location. The minors were subsequently released on scene to the custody of their parents.
Aug. 14
4:09 a.m.: UTRGV officers were dispatched to the Village parking lot in reference to a possible disturbance. Contact was made with a non-affiliated man and woman who were making excessive noise. No criminal elements were met and both parties were advised to keep the noise level down.
12:33 p.m.: UTRGV officers were dispatched to the University Library in reference to a fire alarm. The Brownsville Fire Department was notified and responded to the scene. The fire department inspected the building and determined it was a false alarm possibly due to storms passing through the area. UTRGV Environmental Health and Safety was notified of the fire alarm.
Aug. 15:
2:39 a.m.: UTRGV officers were dispatched to the UTRGV Police Department in reference to a non-affiliated man reporting that he was assaulted off campus. The man was referred to the Edinburg Police Department for further investigation of the assault.
1:54 p.m.: A UTRGV officer was dispatched to Lot E-7 regarding a two-vehicle collision. Upon arrival the officer contacted a male student who stated while backing up his vehicle struck a parked and unattended vehicle. No injuries were reported. The owner of the other vehicle arrived and exchanged required information.
Aug. 16:
11:28 a.m.: Officers made contact with an Edinburg UTRGV Facilities employee who stated he went on vacation and placed his university issued tools inside his office. When he returned, he noticed that his tools were missing. The case is under investigation.
11:46 a.m.: UTRGV officers made contact with a university employee who stated she was receiving threatening messages from her ex-husband. After further investigation, it was determined that the elements for a criminal offense were not met. A report was taken for documentation reasons.
2:44 p.m.: A student reported that a camera was stolen from his dorm room at The Village on the Edinburg campus. The student left for about a week and returned to clean out his room and noticed that his camera was not where he left it. There were no signs of forced entry, and no other items were reported stolen.
3:45 p.m.: A female student reported an encounter with a male student that made her feel uncomfortable. The elements for a criminal offense were not met, and the case will be forwarded to Student Rights and Responsibilities for administrative disciplinary review.
