The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between March 2 and 22.
March 2
3:31 p.m.: An officer generated an information report in reference to a traffic accident report that occurred Feb. 25 on South Padre Island. The initial report was generated by the South Padre Island Police Department. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
March 4
6:46 p.m.: A non-affiliated witness reported a vehicle colliding with an unattended vehicle in Lot E-32 on the Edinburg campus. The suspect left the area without leaving notice. The unattended vehicle received minor damage. The officer attempted to contact the owner of the unattended vehicle but was unsuccessful. The case is pending.
8:28 p.m.: A staff member and student reported that she discovered a tracking device on her vehicle. The vehicle was parked on the Edinburg campus most of the day. She suspects her ex-boyfriend of installing the device. The student employee does not wish to press criminal charges. The device was submitted into evidence.
March 10
7:25 a.m.: A UTRGV police officer was dispatched to the brush areas by the UTRGV Research Office building on the Brownsville campus after a report of two suspicious subjects hiding behind a shipping container. Upon arrival, the two men from Mexico were detained and taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol.
8:55 a.m.: A UT Regional Health Center Houston employee reported the theft of a $350 pair of AirPods from inside her office near the Life and Health Sciences Building on the Brownsville campus.
11:32 a.m.: A UTRGV officer observed a two-vehicle collision on the public roadway. The officer checked for injuries and then relocated the vehicles into Lot E-7 on the Edinburg campus. An Edinburg police officer arrived to take the report, and a subsequent records check found that one non-affiliated man had an outstanding warrant out of Hidalgo County for assault, a class A misdemeanor. The officer then placed him under arrest for the active warrant with the assistance of the UTRGV officer.
10:03 p.m.: UTRGV police officers responded to an injured person report involving an employee who had fallen outside the Academic Support Facility on the Edinburg campus. The officers discovered an unconscious woman lying on the steps of the entrance to the building. The officers requested emergency medical services, and she regained consciousness. Emergency medical services transported the employee to the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance for medical care.
March 11
10:31 a.m.: A student reported the theft of his Apple AirPods charger case, which had only the right ear AirPod. The student said he left the case on the sink in the men’s bathroom in the Science Complex on the Edinburg campus.
1:13 p.m.: An employee on the Edinburg campus reported four test kits from the Psychology Department were borrowed by a student under a contract with the university which stated she would be held financially liable for the items and a hold placed on her UTRGV account if they were not returned. The total value for the four test kits is $4,000 and to this date, the student has failed to return the items.
2:12 p.m.: An employee reported that between 6 p.m. March 4 and 6 a.m. March 5, an unknown person(s) stole his hoodie, several food items and a water bottle thermos from a conference room located inside the Clinical Education Building Library on the Harlingen campus. The employer reported that the conference room had been left unlocked. The total value of theft is $90.
7 p.m.: An employee reported that another employee pushed her with her left hand on her abdomen area when she was by the main entrance doorway to the Main Building on the Brownsville campus. The employee reported that she was not injured and did not feel pain but was offended by the contact which occurred at their end of shift around 2:50 a.m. An officer made contact with the employee involved, who reported that she did not touch the reporting party at any time that night. This case is under investigation.
8:33 p.m.: An employee reported he observed a man in a security uniform strike an outside metal table and chairs and possibly hit a brick wall while driving a white golf cart at about 8 p.m. March 10. The employee and the officer checked the tables, chairs and a brick archway wall near the Main Building on the Brownsville campus but found no damage.
11:41 p.m.: UTRGV police officers were dispatched to the Life and Health Science Building on the Brownsville campus regarding several individuals running through campus. Officers were able to detain all three men, who were from Mexico. The U.S. Border Patrol arrived and took custody of the three subjects.
March 14
6:38 p.m.: Officers observed markings made in spray paint on a transformer located outside of the UTRGV Baseball Stadium on the Edinburg campus. The transformer is not university property. The officers attempted to contact the owner of the transformer but were unsuccessful. The case is pending further investigation.
March 15
2:15 p.m.: An officer was dispatched to the Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus to make contact with a student in reference to graffiti in the unisex bathroom inside Cortez Hall.
3:49 p.m.: An officer conducted a traffic stop after observing a vehicle run a red light in Hidalgo County. During the stop, it was found the driver had an active warrant with the Texas Parole Board for resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor. The warrant was confirmed and the individual was transported to the Hidalgo County Jail. Upon arrival, jail staff advised that they would not accept him for housing. The non-affiliated man was subsequently released back at his residence. A teletype was sent to the Parole Board, advising the man was not housed and the confirmed warrant would need to be corrected.
4:09 p.m.: Officers were dispatched to the UTRGV Police Department in Edinburg in reference to damage found to a student’s vehicle. The student said she had arrived on campus and upon return found damage to her rear driver-side door. After reporting the incident, she contacted the police department to advise that she was contacted by her neighbor, who said he had caused the damage. The student stated the incident would be handled between both parties.
March 16
12:26 p.m.: UTRGV police officers responded to an active fire alarm at Cavalry Hall on the Brownsville campus. Upon arrival, officers found no signs of fire. The fire alarm system has an ongoing problem, which has been reported. The Brownsville Fire Department was initially requested and was later canceled.
4:34 p.m.: A UTRGV employee reported being notified by Chase Bank regarding a forged check bearing the UTRGV insignia. Due to the check number not existing with the university, it was confirmed fraudulent. There was no monetary loss to the university. The case is under investigation.
March 17
10:28 a.m.: UTRGV police officers responded to a call of possible undocumented immigrants running on East Jackson Street by the Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus. UTRGV police officers detained five subjects. U.S. Border Patrol arrived and took custody of the five men, who were from Mexico.
11 a.m.: An employee injured her left ring finger during work-related training. The employee stated her wedding band got caught on a door latch while running, which caused a strain and small laceration on her finger. The employee refused emergency medical services and went to Edinburg Regional Hospital for further care.
11:21 a.m.: An employee reported losing a university-issued key, which grants access to his office.
March 18
1:54 a.m.: UTRGV police officers were dispatched to the area of Texas Southmost College Facilities in Brownsville in reference to several individuals seen on camera running toward the TSC Recreation Center. The police officers along with the U.S. Border Patrol arrived on location. Border Patrol was able to detain several individuals in front of the center. One man from Mexico was detained by a UTRGV police officer near the Fort Brown Condos and was turned over to Border Patrol without incident.
March 19
7:12 a.m.: A UTRGV police officer assisted U.S. Border Patrol in regard to several undocumented immigrants crossing north from the Wildlife Refuge in Brownsville. The UTRGV police officer detained one subject that was turned over to U.S. Border Patrol. A total of eight men were taken into custody by Border Patrol in the brush area adjacent to Lot B-4 on the Brownsville campus. All subjects claimed to be from Mexico.
7:37 a.m.: UTRGV police officers responded to a call of possible undocumented immigrants running on East Jackson Street by the Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus. UTRGV police officers detained five subjects. U.S. Border Patrol arrived and took custody of the men, who claimed to be from Mexico.
March 20
2:34 a.m.: A police officer contacted a student inside the UTRGV Police Department lobby on the Brownsville campus. The student stated he contacted 911 due to feeling ill and was concerned about a cut he sustained earlier in the day at his off-campus place of employment. The student appeared to be disoriented and confused. UTRGV Police Communications contacted emergency medical services for further medical evaluation. The student was transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center for further medical attention.
6:30 p.m.: An officer was dispatched to Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus in reference to a student reporting Facebook posts about her made by her non-affiliated ex-boyfriend. It was found the posts did not meet the elements of a crime. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
11:07 p.m: An officer was contacted by a non-affiliated woman, who stated that she parked her vehicle to walk on campus and when she returned the passenger side door was open. The woman stated that she checked her vehicle and nothing was missing. After reviewing surveillance footage, it was determined she had left the passenger door open before going on her walk.
March 21
2:46 p.m.: A UTRGV police officer was contacted by a UTRGV employee on the Harlingen campus to report damage to a state-owned vehicle due to high winds. The employee stated that as he exited the vehicle through the driver’s side door, a strong gust of wind caught the door causing it to open further than normal. Due to the wind, the driver’s side door is misaligned and difficult to open.
5:15 p.m.: A UTRGV employee on the Brownsville campus reported observing minor damage to his university-assigned vehicle. At this time, it is uncertain how the damage occurred.
7:24 p.m.: A UTRGV police officer was dispatched to the first-floor bathroom at Emilia Schunior Ramirez Hall on the Edinburg campus in reference to found narcotics. Upon arrival, contact was made with an employee who reported that while cleaning the bathroom he found a clear plastic bag with what appeared to be mushrooms inside. The mushrooms were submitted into evidence for destruction.
March 22
1:58 a.m.: U.S. Border Patrol informed university police officers about individuals who had crossed over the border fence behind the Interdisciplinary Academic Building and were in Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. Two men were detained in Lot B-1 by UTRGV officers and U.S. Border Patrol. Two additional men were detained south of the border fence by the U.S. Border Patrol. U.S. Border Patrol took custody of all apprehended unaffiliated individuals. At least two individuals were from Mexico and one from Honduras. Border Patrol removed the rest of the subjects from the scene before more information was obtained.
6:06 a.m.: A UTRGV police dispatcher observed a group of subjects cross the border fence behind the Interdisciplinary Academic Building on the Brownsville campus and enter a vehicle. UTRGV police officers responded to the area and attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle fled. The officer disengaged and returned to campus, where two other subjects were apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol. The subjects claimed to be from El Salvador and Mexico.
10:40 a.m.: A UTRGV Parking and Transportation staff member reported she was verbally insulted by a male student as he was boarding the UTRGV Volt Transportation Cart she was driving. The staff member refused to file criminal charges but wanted the incident documented.
