Police Reports: March 22-29

The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between March 22 and 29. 

March 22

2:12 p.m.: A male student reported his window had been broken by a rock when landscapers were trimming grass in the area by Schunior Street and 2nd Avenue in Edinburg. Contact was made with a UTRGV groundskeeping supervisor who advised the officer that arrangements had been made to fix the damage. 

3:12 p.m.: A UTRGV police officer on patrol responded to a traffic collision that had occurred moments before his arrival to Lot E-16 on the Edinburg campus. Both parties involved were UTRGV students. One male student was transported by emergency medical services to the Rio Grande Regional 24/7 Hospital for medical evaluation.

4:55 p.m.: UTRGV police officers responded to a call in reference to damage to a student’s vehicle. Upon camera review, it was found that an unidentified individual parked next to the student and opened the door, striking the other vehicle.

5:21 p.m.: A male student reported that an unknown individual(s) had taken his basketball without his consent at the University Recreation Center on the Edinburg campus. The student provided a description of the suspect who was last seen with his basketball. The case is under investigation.

11:46 p.m.: A UTRGV police officer responded to a female student who said she was not feeling well in Lot E-7 on the Edinburg campus. The student refused emergency medical services and was picked up by a family member. 

March 23

8:32 a.m.: A UTRGV faculty member reported that while he was in Athens, Greece, his backpack was stolen. The faculty member stated that inside his backpack he had a university-issued iPad and two university-issued keys that were taken. The faculty member filed a theft report with the corresponding agency (Syntagma Police Department).

March 24

12:47 a.m.: A UTRGV police officer observed damage to a vehicle parked at the science loading dock parking area on the Edinburg campus. The officer contacted the owner who was identified as a UTRGV employee. The employee stated that she could not confirm when the damage occurred. The camera footage showed the damage did not occur on campus.

March 25

11:57 a.m: A UTRGV student reported minor damage to her vehicle on the Edinburg. The student said she believes the vehicle might have been damaged sometime last month while parked and unattended on campus. The student was not able to provide a specific date, time or campus parking location. She said she left campus and parked at an off-campus location last month. A report was generated for documentation purposes.

1:50 p.m.: A UTRGV student reported she was involved in a traffic accident off campus. The Edinburg Police Department took the primary report. The student said the EPD officer advised her to contact the UTRGV Police Department to obtain possible camera footage of the accident from cameras at Lot E-34 on the Edinburg campus. The officer advised the student that EPD will need to contact University Police to access camera footage. A report was taken for documentation purposes.

March 26

5:17 p.m.: A UTRGV police officer observed an ambulance arriving at the Village Apartments on the Edinburg campus. The officer contacted emergency medical services personnel who advised they responded to a call. The officer and EMS contacted a female student who was feeling dizzy. The student was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

March 28

1:52 a.m.: UTRGV police officers responded to a fire alarm in the Student Union on the Edinburg campus. The area was checked by the Edinburg Fire Department, and deemed safe. EFD believed the alarm had been activated by a drop in water pressure to the building.

8:13 a.m.: A UTRGV officer found a wallet while on patrol on North Sugar Road in Edinburg. The officer secured the wallet at the property locker at the UTRGV Police Department in Edinburg. The wallet belonged to a student.

9:17 a.m.: A UTRGV officer responded to a theft report at the Village Apartments on the Edinburg campus. A student said he ordered a 32-inch television and was informed by FedEx that it was delivered to his apartment on March 17 when he was out of town. The officer reviewed camera footage for the date and time provided but nobody was seen delivering a package to the student’s apartment.

9:41 a.m.: A UTRGV officer assisted the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Deputy to serve a protective order at Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus. The student was not found and has not returned to Unity Hall in over two months.

10:59 a.m.: A UTRGV officer responded to a hit-and-run collision report in Lot E-9 on the Edinburg campus. The student said someone hit her driver’s side door causing minor damage while she was parked in Lot E-9.

6:37 p.m.: A UTRGV police officer responded to the sound of a motor vehicle collision at the corner of University Boulevard and Jackson Street in Brownsville. A U.S. Border Patrol vehicle backed up and struck a stopped vehicle on Jackson Street. No injuries were reported. A CR3 report was generated.

March 29

9:53 a.m.: A UTRGV officer responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a university facilities vehicle in Lot-37 on the Edinburg campus. The employee who was driving the university vehicle hit an oncoming vehicle after making a right turn. There was minor damage to both vehicles and no injuries were reported.

11:57 a.m.: A UTRGV officer responded to an injured person in the Education Complex on the Edinburg campus. A male employee said he was walking through the ADA doors when the doors closed on him, which caused a minor laceration to his left forearm. Emergency medical services arrived and transported the faculty member to Doctors Hospital Renaissance for treatment.

12:44 p.m.: A UTRGV officer responded to a report of an ill person in the Community Engagement and Student Success Building. A non-affiliated woman felt ill and fainted. Emergency medical services arrived and evaluated the woman. The woman was transported to Edinburg Regional Hospital for treatment.

2:06 p.m.: Officers responded to a possible theft report in the University Recreation Center on the Edinburg campus. Contact was made with a male student who said his backpack had been stolen out of a second-floor locker. After review of video footage, it was discovered the student placed his backpack in another locker.

3:19 p.m.: A male student reported receiving alarming text messages from an unknown person(s). The messages threatened violence against him and his family if he did not send money.

6:20 p.m.: Officers responded to a call in reference to markings found in the first-floor men’s bathroom in the Student Academic Center on the Edinburg campus. The markings were made with permanent black marker on the wall in the ADA toilet area. A work order was placed to have the markings removed.

8:51 p.m.: A female student reported she had been approached on March 26 by an unknown female who was asking for money. The description provided matches a non-affiliated female who has an active criminal trespass warning. The student said she could identify the female if she were to see her again.
