The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Oct. 7 and 13.
Oct. 7
9:40 a.m.: An officer responded to Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus in reference to a report of criminal mischief. A housing coordinator reported that a male student damaged a dorm room door by kicking it in. The student has been identified. The incident will be referred to Student Rights and Responsibilities for review.
11:32 a.m.: An officer responded to the UT Health Biomedical Research Facility on the Edinburg campus in reference to an ill person. The officer spoke with a female staff member who reported feeling ill due to receiving a booster vaccine the previous day. Med Care EMS transported the staff member to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (Edinburg) for further medical evaluation.
3:38 p.m.: A student reported that someone struck her vehicle on Sept. 30, 2021, while it was parked in Lot E-27 on the Edinburg campus. The vehicle sustained visible damage to the back left quarter panel. The case is under investigation.
3:51 p.m.: An officer responded to the training room at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium on the Edinburg campus in reference to an intoxicated female student. The officer observed the student to have symptoms of intoxication. While the student was looking for an identification card in her backpack, the officer observed a tequila bottle in her backpack. In lieu of arrest, the student was released to her mother at the scene. The incident will be handled administratively through Student Rights and Responsibilities.
4:50 p.m.: An officer was notified by UTRGV Police Department Communications of an email received by a faculty member. He stated a student reached out to him regarding being a victim of domestic abuse off campus. The Edinburg Police Department assisted with a welfare check at the student’s residence. At this time, it was determined that the student was OK and with her mother. University Police’s Victim Services will contact the student to offer further assistance.
6:54 p.m.: A student reported losing her car keys in the Academic Services Building on the Edinburg campus. It was later determined the keys were found by a staff member. The keys have been turned in to University Police and will be released to the student.
Oct. 8
9:49 a.m.: A staff member reported losing three university-issued keys in the area of the Health and Physical Education II building on the Edinburg campus.
9:51 a.m.: A staff member reported that while exiting his vehicle, he accidentally hit a vehicle that was parked next to him with the door, causing a scratch on the Brownsville campus. The owner of the vehicle was located and informed of the incident.
12:03 p.m.: A staff member reported losing her university-issued access control card at an off-campus location. The staff member’s access card was deactivated.
12:34 p.m.: The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Police Department requested assistance from a University Police K-9 team for an explosives sweep at an Edinburg school. The sweep was conducted without incident.
2:08 p.m.: An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on the Brownsville campus. Upon contact with the non-affiliated male driver, the officer detected an odor of marijuana in the vehicle. During the drug investigation, the male passenger was found in possession of a small quantity of marijuana. The driver was issued a citation for not having a driver’s license and insurance. The passenger received a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia (Class C misdemeanor). The vehicle was released to a licensed driver at the scene. The contraband was submitted as evidence.
2:50 p.m.: A staff member reported backing into an occupied vehicle while reversing in a university-owned golf cart in the area of lot E-36 on the Edinburg campus. No injuries were reported, only minor damage to both vehicles.
Oct. 9
10:21 p.m.: A Residence Life and Housing staff member reported a liquor violation involving a female student and her non-affiliated male friend at her apartment in the Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus. The student admitted to purchasing alcohol and furnishing it to her friend, who was under age 21. The student was subsequently placed under arrest for purchase of alcohol for a minor and furnishing Alcohol to a Minor, both Class A misdemeanors. The minor was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by minor and issued a criminal trespass warning. The minor displayed signs of intoxication and was released to a friend at the location. The incident will be referred to Student Rights and Responsibilities for further review.
Oct. 10
7:33 p.m.: The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Police Department requested assistance from a University Police K-9 team for an explosives sweep at an Edinburg school. The sweep was conducted without incident.
Oct. 11
3:11 a.m.: An officer patrolling the parking lot at the Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus observed a marijuana plant growing along the north fence line of the complex. The officer seized the plant, which tested positive for marijuana. The plant was submitted as evidence for destruction.
11:56 a.m.: A contract employee reported having an allergic reaction to an unknown substance while working at the Student Union on the Brownsville campus. The employee declined emergency medical services.
2:21 p.m.: A staff member reported that sports memorabilia was stolen from his office at the International Trade and Technology Building on the Edinburg campus. The case is under investigation.
5:06 p.m.: An officer responded to the Village Apartments on the Edinburg campus in reference to a report of a student having a seizure. The officer located the student, who confirmed he was experiencing dizziness, not a seizure. The student declined emergency medical services.
5:51 p.m.: A faculty member reported the soap and hand sanitizer dispensers located in a restroom on the second floor of the Mathematics and General Classroom building on the Edinburg campus had been removed from the wall. The case is under investigation.
11:27 p.m.: A faculty member reported a non-affiliated male offered her money for the purpose of engaging in sexual conduct on the Edinburg campus. The male suspect was located, identified and issued a criminal trespass warning. The case is under investigation.
Oct. 12
9:50 a.m.: A faculty member at the Life and Health Science building on the Brownsville campus reported a student was issued a key to a lab in the building in May 2021. The faculty member reported the student has not made an attempt to return the issued key.
12:42 p.m.: Officers and the Edinburg Fire Department responded to the Science Complex in reference to two students being stuck inside an elevator. The fire department had to forcibly pry the elevator doors open to safely remove the students. An elevator service contractor was on scene to repair the damages to the elevator caused by the forced opening.
5:28 p.m.: A staff member reported that his ex-girlfriend had entered his vehicle, which was parked in Lot E-37 on the Edinburg campus, without his consent. The case is under investigation.
5:29 p.m.: An officer responded to parking lot E-9 on the Edinburg campus in reference to a student reporting minor scrapes to the rear driver side door of her vehicle. The student was not sure where the damage to her vehicle occurred, but wanted to document the incident. The officer checked the parking lot cameras and confirmed the student’s vehicle had not been damaged while it was parked in Lot E-9.
9:29 p.m.: An officer was dispatched to the Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus in reference to a resident assistant reporting an odor of burnt marijuana in an apartment. The officer made contact with the apartment residents and determined the odor of marijuana was not present.
Oct. 13
12:25 p.m.: Officers and the Edinburg Fire Department responded to the Science Complex in reference to an active fire alarm. The fire panel indicated a smoke detector in the building had been triggered. An investigation revealed that food had been overcooked in a microwave oven. The building was cleared for re-entry.
4:04 p.m.: A staff member was alerted by a student that an unknown male allegedly snapped a photo while he changed in a bathroom stall on the second floor of the University Library on the Edinburg campus. At the time of this report, the student did not want to identify himself. The case is under investigation.
