UTRGV Rider Esports Club and Goliath Toys and Retro Games are organizing a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament for the university and Edinburg community.
The tournament will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Goliath Toys and Retro Games store in Edinburg.
Roberto Treviño, president of the Rider Esports Club and marketing senior, explained the main purpose of the competition.
“So, this venue has events every week right,” Treviño said. “But we’re trying to build the scene like in the community as well, so we decided, ‘Hey, let’s team up and help invite the university to play as well, not just local players.’”
Treviño said another goal they have as a club is to raise money. So, the registration fee for the tournament will be $10.
Rider Esports Club will compete at the Texas Showdown Championships 2019 which will take place May 10-12 in Houston. This is another reason why the club wants to organize and invite the people to participate. So they can practice before they go to compete at the Showdown.
Alejandro Hernandez, a mechanical engineering freshman, and a future competitor in the tournament was asked about what inspired him to compete.
“For me, I enjoyed tournaments in general,” Hernandez replied. “Just because the good atmosphere around, everyone is playing games, it is just fun.”
He also encourages community members to participate and enjoy a good time of fun while playing one of the most popular video games in recent years.
