The UTRGV Volleyball Team swept California State University, Bakersfield 3-0 at home tonight in a rematch of last year’s Western Athletic Tournament Championship match.
In Fall 2017, the Vaqueras fell 3-1 to the Roadrunners in the WAC Championship game.
Head Coach Todd Lowery said tonight’s victory was primarily due to few errors.
“I don’t think we changed anything,” Lowery said. “I think the girls took care of the ball a lot better.”
In the first set of the match, the Vaqueras came out dominating 6-1. UTRGV continued the momentum and took a six-point lead (16-10), but was cut short when CSU took the lead 20-19.
The Vaqueras came back and sealed the set 25-23 to give the team a 1-0 lead.
UTRGV’s biggest lead in set two was nine points, when the Vaqueras reached 19-10 on an ace by sophomore setter Debora Nazario.
The Roadrunners jumped back into the game when they trailed the Vaqueras by two points at 22-20.
A kill by senior outside hitter Ragni Steen Knudsen ended the set in favor of the Vaqueras, 25-20, giving the team a 2-0 lead.
For the third set, UTRGV took the biggest lead of the set at 17-11. CSU cut the Vaqueras lead by two points when the game reached 18-16.
An ace by senior setter Dubravka Vukoja gave UTRGV a 25-20 victory, ending the game 3-0.
Leading the team were Knudsen with 16 kills and nine digs, senior middle blocker Alexandra Ecker with seven kills, five blocks and five digs and senior libero Gysell Zayas with 22 digs.
The Vaqueras are now 6-3 in WAC play and will face off against Utah Valley University at noon Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
