The Student Government Association senate met last Friday for the second week in a row after not meeting quorum the week before.
They were not able to vote on anything when they did not meet quorum on Sept. 28, so they met the following week, when two items were introduced to the senate.
The first item was the Special Event Funds Guidelines, which were created to provide funds for organizations to host events on campus that “enhance the academic environment,” according to the guidelines.
Senate Bill 04-04: Constitution of the Student Government Association Amendment Bill calls for a change to the required grade-point average for the executive branch from a 3.0 to a 2.8, with a maintenance of a 2.5 GPA per semester.
College of Fine Arts Senators Steven Hughes and Alexandra Mendoza created the bill because there are several executive positions not filled, causing the members to take on more work.
Senate Chair Alexandra Smith sent the guidelines and the amendment to the Internal Affairs standing committee for review.
SGA members are required to submit an excuse if they are not able to attend the meetings. They do not excuse work-related absences.
Smith spoke to the members about the lack of attendance in the last meeting and reminded them of their responsibility with SGA.
“I know emergencies come up and I know academics come first because I am a student, too,” Smith said. “But, I also have high expectations from you and you should, too.”
She read the constitution absence policy and said it pertains to every meeting, including senate and committees.
The next meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Biomedical Research & Health Building 1.207 on the Brownsville campus and in Health Affairs Building West 2.212 on the Edinburg campus.
