The Brownsville City Commission voted last Tuesday to award a contract to RM Walsdorf Inc. for the construction of the Southmost Nature Trail.
Approval of the $572,168.85 project allows the trail to enter its second phase, spanning from Manzano Street to La Posada Drive.
The first phase of the eventual 7-mile trail was opened in May 2017 and extends 1.75 miles, connecting
to Porter High School and Del Castillo Elementary, the City of Brownsville website states. Trail amenities include a bike repair station. Phase one starts on Vera Avenue and ends just past its intersection with Austin Road.
Frank Gudino, bicycle and pedestrian coordinator for the Multimodal Transportation Department, informed the commission that the HALFF Associates Inc. project engineer and Texas Department of Transportation made the recommendation to award the contract to RM Walsdorf Inc., as it was the lower of the two bids submitted for the project.
Commissioner At-Large “B” Rose Gowen asked that the department look into incorporating the trail through La Posada Park.
The commission unanimously voted to award the contract to RM Walsdorf Inc. of Brownsville after Gowen made the motion to approve it and was seconded by District 3 Commissioner Roy De los Santos.
Groundbreaking for the Southmost Nature Trail is scheduled for March 11.
