Stimulate Your Mind

Karina Rodriguez | The Rider

When studying, it is easy to begin feeling unenergized and distracted. Whether your place of study is in a bustling coffee shop, a quiet library or the comfort of your own home, studying can always be a challenge. Surprisingly, music can be a great sedative for all the anxieties and issues that come with studying.

With almost everyone carrying around a cellphone, laptop or another type of electronic device, music is the most accessible as it has ever been. The use of music when working out, driving and many other daily activities have been accepted, but it seems that studying while studying is still heavily debated.

Much like you would not usually listen to slow, sad music during a grueling workout or heavy rock during a mellow walk, some music types help aid studying more than others.

It is easy to want brain stimulation that is not the non-interesting textbook that is in front of you. For most people, that means resorting to scrolling through Twitter, watching a show on half their laptop screen or abandoning the assignments altogether.

Studies have shown that music can act as a great brain stimulator that mixes well with studying. Though the majority of the studies do seem to be in favor of music during long study sessions, they also note that it can be a source of distraction. To combat this distraction, they find that playing mellow coffee shop-like music or classical music is the best way to keep your brain activity up without inhibiting your studies.

Finding ways to keep your mind active while studying is important. Never forget that although studying is hard, there are ways to make it easier and much more enjoyable for you. Do not be afraid to find the genre of music that works for you while studying. You never know how much it can benefit the way you study and ultimately perform in school overall.
