Members of the Student Government Association will take part in a physical survey of lighting conditions on the Edinburg campus at 7 tonight.
“We are going to, literally, physically walk through the campus with a light meter and check to make sure we are up to code in as many locations as possible,” SGA Edinburg Vice President Peter Averack said during the senate’s weekly meeting last Friday.
SGA is working with University Police and Environmental Health Safety and Risk Management to conduct the survey after students presented the issue for more than a year to the SGA, Averack said.
The group conducting the walk-through will look for areas that are not meeting the standard of at least one foot-candle of illumination, he said. This standard is set by the Illumination Engineers Society of North America.
Richard Costello, director of Environmental Health Safety and Risk Management, will use a light meter to measure the foot-candles of ambient lighting, Averack told The Rider on Tuesday.
“According to the basic standard for a university campus, the standard asks for a one foot-candle, which is very, very low,” he said.
