The Vaqueros defeated the Seattle University RedHawks 59-44 in a home game tonight in the UTRGV Fieldhouse, improving their record to 15-12 overall and 7-4 in conference.
UTRGV started off quickly with a 3-pointer by junior guard Jordan Jackson. Senior forward Terry Winn III made a layup, leading the Vaqueros 5-3.
During the first seven minutes, the Vaqueros took a 13-5 lead and held the RedHawks to two shot attempts and forced eight turnovers.
At the end of the first half, junior forward Lesley Varner II made a couple of layups and sophomore guard Greg Bowie II made a jumper to push UTRGV’s lead 21-15.
In the second half with 4:47 at the mark, the Vaqueros made a 14-5 run, increasing their lead and finishing the game 59-44. It’s the first time the Vaqueros take a win against the RedHawks in a season.
Head Coach Lew Hill discussed tonight’s victory.
“The ball line is winning, and we did enough to win tonight,” Hill said. “So excited about the win, and I told my guys we’ll always [be] excited about [the] win.”
The next match for the Vaqueros will be at 7 p.m. Saturday against Utah Valley University in the UTRGV Fieldhouse on the Edinburg campus.
