The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has teamed up with several local businesses and organizations to host #Subculture: Urban Art Experience from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in downtown Brownsville.
“It’s an event that involves UTRGV students, artists, musicians, staff; it’s a free community event and it’s an opportunity for community members, students and faculty to enjoy the day and attend different workshops that are interactive, they’re fun, they’re a little different,” said Jennifer McGehee-Valdez, UTRGV director of Public Relations.
The first 200 attendees who stop by all the workshops will receive a custom T-shirt. The workshops are printmaking, photography, virtual reality, Humans of UTRGV, music and social media.
“We have printmaking and photography, which is going to be like a little short film,” McGehee-Valdez said. “There is virtual reality, which gives people opportunities to get 3-D photos or try on virtual reality goggles or headsets.
“Humans of UTRGV is going to have a little setup as well. You can kind of learn more about that and participate. There’s going to be UTRGV Radio on site doing karaoke, they’ll be making some announcements, playing music, of course. There’s also going to be a social media workshop that gives people the opportunity to learn a little bit about the importance of having, you know, a decent profile photo if you’re looking for an internship or a job, and they’ll take the photo there and have it sent to you.”
Collaborating with UTRGV are BAM, Activating Vacancy Arts Incubator (AVAI), the Kraken Lounge and Main Street Brownsville.
The entrance to the event is located at the intersection of East Adams and 12th streets. A map of the #Subculture: Urban Art Experience workshops map is available here.
Food trucks will be present at the event.
A shuttle service is available for students on the Edinburg campus interested in attending the event. Students must call 882-8231 to reserve a spot by 1 p.m. Friday. There are only 22 seats available.
“We’re just really excited to provide a free community event where, you know, community members, students, staff, faculty can come and enjoy themselves, learn something new, walk away with experience,” McGehee-Valdez said. “That’s the whole thing, urban art experience.”
