Earlier today, UT Health RGV announced that it will distribute boosters of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine until Thursday at the Community Engagement and Student Success Building, Room 1.101, in Edinburg to those who are eligible.
Those eligible include anyone age 65 and older who received their second dose of the Pfizer vaccines at least six months ago, people age 12 and older who are moderate to severely immunocompromised and received their second dose of either Pfizer or Moderna at least 28 days or four weeks ago, 18-to-64-year-olds with any underlying medical condition who received their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine at least six months ago and anyone age 18 and older with occupations that elevate their risk of exposure who received their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine at least six months ago.
Anyone meeting the above qualifications may receive a booster by appointment only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Thursday, Sept. 30.
According to the announcement from UT Health RGV, additional opportunities for boosters or additional doses will be announced soon.
Doug Arney, vice president for Administrative Support Services and chair of the Infectious Disease Committee at UTRGV, said his message to those who are eligible for the booster is to get it by all means.
Arney said the boosters will be for only those who received the Pfizer vaccine.
He said there is no prioritization of people who are not vaccinated over people seeking a booster.
“If you want a vaccine, first or second shot, we will give it to you any day you want, and there is a separate process for boosters,” Arney said.
He said the process is different to receive a booster because UT Health RGV first needs to verify that people have taken their first and second shots of Pfizer.
“We don’t know how long we’re going to be doing this for,” Arney said. “Probably, you can get your first dose, second dose and booster just at other places, but right now, we’re [trying]to get eligible booster individuals through this line and get as many people as possible.”
