The Vaqueras won 1-0 against Grambling State University with only five minutes remaining in the match Friday night at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Despite the Vaqueras’ many attempts on target, Grambling’s goalkeeper Rachel Pugh made it a long night for the home team, stopping seven out of eight shots.
Both teams refused to give in to one another; however, in the end, UTRGV forward Emily Zapata scored the sole goal of the night.
“I think it’s emotional because we fought the last five minutes to score and we did, and I’m just really happy,” Zapata said.
However, there is still some work to be done.
“I think we have to keep on going and fighting for more goals because I think we missed a lot,” she said.
UTRGV controlled the entire game.
“I think we played quite well,” Head Coach Glad Bugariu said. “The goalkeeper made some good saves, so it really doesn’t matter when the goal comes, as long as it does.”
Next, the UTRGV Women’s Soccer Team will face Texas A&M University in College Station at 6 p.m. Sunday.
