The Vaqueros lost 6-3 in the first game of the series to California Baptist University Thursday night at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium with an attendance of 1,040 people.
In the top of the first inning, California Baptist took the lead when Chad Castillo scored the first run with back-to-back singles by Andrew Bash and Ryan Mota.
Vaquero sophomore Oliver Closner IV started the third inning with a walk, which was followed by junior Coleman Grubbs hitting a single, putting the players on the corners. The Vaqueros were able to score the team’s first run with an RBI single delivered by senior Anthony Gomez.
UTRGV proceeded to take a 2-1 lead after an RBI groundout by junior Conrado Diaz, allowing Grubbs to score the run.
CBU scored four more runs in the top of the six and one more in the top of the seventh, leaving the game score 6-2.
At the bottom of the seventh, Grubbs made the last run for the team after a sacrifice fly from junior Cristian Sepulveda, which also allowed Diaz to advance to third base.
Head Coach Derek Matlock shared his thoughts on Thursday night’s game.
“We got to readjust because they got great arms on the mound the next two days, great arms,” Matlock said. “It is what it is. We got to move on, we got to flush losses like these, and we got to play better.”
The Vaqueros will play in the second game of the series at 7 p.m. today at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The final game will take place at noon Saturday at home.
