Due to the cancellation of all events on the UTRGV campus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Student Activities have found online alternatives in which students can stay involved with the school community.

“Any in-person events that we had scheduled are canceled until further notice,” said Cindy Mata-Vasquez, director of Student Activities at UTRGV. “The Student Activities office is working on getting a plan together to host [online] activities.”

The department is working with various offices, such as University Recreation, Student Union, and Leadership and Mentoring, to keep providing students a way to reconnect with the UTRGV community.

Last Tuesday, the Student Union hosted its first online event, Pet Show and Tell. The event was held via Zoom and it encouraged students to introduce their pets to the other participants. About 45 guests, including students and staff, engaged, according to Mabel Cortina-Matos, event manager for the Student Union.

“The event went exceptionally well, considering it was the first event to happen on an online platform,” Cortina-Matos said. “This is a really great way to stay connected to the university. We want to help students to continue to build community, even under these circumstances.”

In the near future, she is looking forward to hosting a TikTok dance challenge. More information will be provided on the Student Union’s social media.

University Recreation will host Zoomba, a Zumba online class. This will happen at 5:30 p.m. Thursday via Zoom. The class schedule and more information will be shared on the department’s social media.

In collaboration with other universities in the University of Texas System, UTRGV will host a Virtual Career Expo from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 7.  Participating employers will range from health care to nonprofit organizations and corporations.

“I think that students can kind of view the different types of employers and opportunities and how they fit into that,” said Ronnie Garcia, assistant director for Employer Relations. “I think this allows students and even employers the opportunity to venture off to new ways to recruit students.”

Students need to pre-register and upload their résumé at https://CareerEco.com/Events/UTSystem.
