Around 9 p.m. Tuesday, the Edinburg Police Department responded to an alleged auto-cyclist collision involving three UTRGV student athletes near 21st Avenue and University Drive, according to a city news release and university officials.
Emergency Medical Services transported the male cyclist to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg, where he remains in serious condition, according to a news release today from Roxanne Lerma, director of Communications & Media for the City of Edinburg.
According to the news release, witnesses on location said the vehicle, a gray Chevrolet Silverado, fled the scene after the collision. Subsequently, a man contacted the Edinburg Police Department and admitted his involvement in the incident.
The Edinburg Police Department conducted an initial investigation and arrested a 19-year-old on a charge of accident involving serious bodily injury, according to the news release. Another 19-year-old and an 18-year-old were passengers and charged with failure to report a felony.
In an email to The Rider, Jonah Goldberg, senior associate athletic director for Communications & Championships, said UTRGV Athletics is “aware of the situation involving three of our student-athletes.”
“We are in the process of gathering information and will take appropriate action if necessary,” Goldberg wrote. “We will have no further comment at this time.”
The case is still under investigation, the news release states. The involved parties were scheduled to be arraigned at 3 p.m. today at the Edinburg Municipal Court, located at 100 E. Freddy Gonzalez Dr.
