Student staff members of The Rider newspaper, UTRGV-TV, Vaquero Radio, Gallery and Pulse magazines garnered 46 previously published and broadcast awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TIPA convention and on-site competitions were canceled. The convention was scheduled to take place March 25 to 28 in Corpus Christi.
TIPA, which was established in 1909, is the oldest state collegiate press association in the nation.s
UTRGV competes in Division 1, which includes the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of North Texas and Texas A&M University.
UTRGV-TV received 13 awards; The Rider, 12; Vaquero Radio (formerly known as UTRGV Radio), 12; Pulse magazine, five; and Gallery magazine, four, for work published and broadcast during 2019.
In the Overall Excellence category, Vaquero Radio placed first in Radio Program, UTRGV-TV placed second in Television Program and Rider Online Editor Leslie Medrano received an honorable mention in website design.
For the Spanish Division contests, former UTRGV-TV reporter Kimberly Meza earned first place in Spanish General News Reporting for her story, “Recuerdan a Víctimas de El Paso y Migrantes” and second place in Spanish Feature News Reporting.
In a collaborative effort, former Rider Spanish Editor Eric Montoya and newspaper Editor-in-Chief Victor G. Ramirez garnered first place in Spanish News Story for their story, “Colegiatura podría incrementar para estudiantes indocumentados.”
Montoya also took first place in Spanish Feature Story for “Voluntarios ayudan a migrantes” and honorable mention in the same category, as well as second place in Feature Story in the Narrative Reporting category.
In the Electronic Reporting category, Rider Photographer Aaliyah Garza, former photographer Fernando Ramirez and Victor G. Ramirez earned first place in Multimedia Slideshow.
Luis Rubio, Vaquero Radio sports reporter, won first place in Live Sports Coverage-Audio.
Former UTRGV-TV Assistant Station Manager Nathaniel Puente placed first and third in Sportscast-Video
In the Production category, Ramirez placed third in newspaper Feature Page/Spread Design.
UTRGV-TV garnered second place in Newscast-Video, and first and second place in Program Production-Video.
TV Station Manager Yuliana Quiroz and Puente received an honorable mention in Best Use of Social Media-Breaking News.
Vaquero Radio earned second place in Advertising Campaign. Jerry Galindo, assistant station manager for Vaquero Radio, placed third in Advertising/PSA/Promo-Audio. Galindo also placed second in General News Audio Story and Sportscast-Audio in the Electronic Reporting category.
Pulse Graphics Editor Michel Flores Tavizon earned an honorable mention in Static Ad Design.
In the Open Division contests, Pulse magazine contributors Laura Juarez and Cecilia Sierra took first place in Magazine Story Package Design. Pulse also placed third in magazine overall design.
Jason Garcia, art director for Gallery magazine, and Carla Ortiz, contributing artist, garnered second place in Cover Design-Literary Magazine. Gallery editors Zugay Treviño and Dora Cantú earned honorable mention in Overall Excellence-Literary Magazine.
Garcia also placed first in Overall Design-Literary Magazine. Gallery contributing artist Pamela Torres placed first in Illustration in the Visual Reporting category.
In other Visual Reporting contests, Rider Cartoonist Elizabeth Mendoza took second and third place in Cartoon Strip/Panel and third in Editorial Cartoon.
Pulse magazine contributor Karalyn Gliebe placed second in General News in the Narrative Reporting category. In the same category, Alejandra Yañez, a reporter for The Rider, garnered third place in Headline Writing. Juanita Maldonado, former Rider sports reporter, earned honorable mention in Sports Column.
