The UTRGV Women’s Basketball Team lost 71-44 against Texas Southern University earlier tonight in the Fieldhouse.
Without three key players on the court, the game wasn’t an easy one to play.
“We’re missing three key players that I think would have made a difference, but that’s no excuse,” Head Coach Lane Lord said.
Sara Bershers, 6-foot shooter from Arkansas; Trelynn Tyler, who Lord calls the team’s best athlete; and Ashley Lopez, who the head coach describes as an explosive player who could have made a difference in tonight’s game.
“We’ll get better on our side,” Lord said. “But really, all the credit right now should go to Texas Southern. They just came in here and kicked our butt in our home place.”
Texas Southern University’s Head Coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke said she was happy with the result, but the team still has some work to do.
“I thought we played really good,” Cooper-Dyke said. “We have to work on man-to-man defense. I thought we fouled a little too much in the third and fourth quarter, but we were able to secure the win and that’s what’s most important.”
UTRGV will be back in action on at 7 p.m. Saturday against Minot State University in the Fieldhouse for a chance to bounce back.
“We have enough talent with what we have,” Lord said. “[We have] to play much better than we did today and we will.”
