Civil engineering sophomore
“Black History Month is really important, especially for us to learn about people who have advocated for the rights to vote. A lot of minorities now have the right to vote, and we have equal pay now because of African-Americans who have advocated in the past. And it’s really important to recognize their history and recognize the culture and realize that it’s very special and important.”

Theatre freshman
“I really like the awareness for the black community. … I really appreciate that there is an awareness of this month … like MLK, even like black celebrities, people who should be heard. I always think that there should be, like, a balance between the whites [and] the blacks or other kind of races who deserve to be heard. And that’s what I believe, that’s what I care about.”

Interdisciplinary studies sophomore
“I think Black History Month is really important because it’s something that keeps a tradition alive and it should be celebrated by everyone, even though you’re not part of that group. So, I think it’s really important as a country to celebrate something that takes us back a lot.”

Criminal justice sophomore
“Knowing the foundations of our country, I think it’s appropriate to celebrate its roots and how far we’ve come as a nation, stemming from slavery to how much African-Americans strive now in today’s society to bring their culture.”
