Why you should get a dog (not a cat)

3 min read

If you’re looking into a new furry member for your family, consider getting a dog. I know it’s an argument seemingly as old as time, but dogs, in my opinion, are the superior pets.

Although not the smartest, dogs have but one thing on their mind: you. Well, if you’re my dog Monty, maybe also food. Either way, dogs love their owners and as the saying goes, they are “man’s best friend.”

There is nothing like the loyalty of a family dog. They wait for you by the door when you leave and follow you around the house.

They also keep their owners healthy by helping promote an active lifestyle. Considering dogs need a lot of exercise like humans, you’ll have a walking partner that is sure to help you stick to your goal of being more active.

Sure, cats take up less space than dogs, but they don’t hate water. When it comes to baths, cats are known for not needing them. This could be convenient until it’s not. Bathing their cat is something most owners dread.

Dogs are easier to train and can be taught cool tricks. There’s a reason that most police animals are dogs. They are also the most common animal for therapy and as a service animal.

Personally, I don’t like the idea of a litter box in my house, let alone having to clean it out every other day, but I can see how it is convenient not having to let a cat out for it to do its business. I think we can all admit that the odor is oftentimes not too pleasant. I prefer letting my dog out and not having to deal with it in the house.

I’m aware that cats offer love and appreciation in their own way and that each cat has its own personality but I love being able to grab my dogs as if they were teddy bears. They love to cuddle and to be scratched. I’m sure this is the same with cats but on their own terms. I can respect that.

Understandably, everyone has their preconceptions on pets and which one is easier for them to maintain given their schedules.

Pets are a big responsibility to take on. Don’t forget to research everything you need to provide your pet with the happiest and healthiest life you can supply.

Every dog breed has its own personality and special needs. Take that into consideration when you’re looking for a dog to get.

Don’t forget to adopt, don’t shop. The local animal shelters have a lot of puppies, dogs and cats that are looking for their forever homes. Most animal shelters are also searching for people who can foster their dogs if they have too many at their locations.

If you’re not too sure if you want a pet, fostering can be a short-term option.

Dogs and cats each have their own pros and cons. So when looking into a new pet, keep these things in mind.
